Saints Basketball Club was founded in 1957 when Jeff Johnson and Jim Richards , being too old for their previous club the YMCA Saxons, decided to form up their own team. As both were ardent St Kilda Football Club supporters , it was only natural that they call their team "Saints". This team was entered into the B Grade Men's competition. Original team members were: Jeffrey Johnson, J im Richards, William Richards, Graeme Carthew, Alan Dixon and Ronald Lancaster. The Saints Women's section was formed six years later in 1962 , with a team entered into the B G rade Women's competition. Original team members were Doreen Corbett, Marlene Johnson, Jan Nicholls, Carol Hood, Nola Judge and Jan Wilkinson. Both Men's and Woman's sections were administered separately. In 1964 the Women's teams increased to 3 , and in 1965 the Men's section entered another team. 1965 the Saints won their first Premiership, when the y won the Men's B grade under Coach Bill Hyde. This season also saw a second men's team entered into C G rade. 1966 realised the start of our Junior program when an U/16 Boys team was entered, coached by Ron Gray. When basketball moved from the YMCA in 1969 to its present location at the Minerdome, Saints had 11 teams and over 80 players . In 1970 Saints Men's and Women's sections were amalgamated , and from this point the club has gone from strength to strength. Today we field over 70 t eams in all grades , and have approximately 500 players representing the Saints Basketball Club each week. In the clubs 4 8 year history, over 4 200 players have donned the Saints uniform . First committee elected :- President : W.A. Hyde |
